How Long Does Scaffolding Stay Up? Typical Times by Job

A realistic guide to erection time and hire length for the most common jobs on a home.

The Short Answer

Most scaffolds go up in half a day to a day. How long they stay up depends on the job: a solar install is usually days, a chimney repair one to two weeks, a re-roof or render two to four weeks, and an extension four to eight weeks. These are typical figures, not guarantees; your quote confirms the real ones.

Typical Times by Job

Solar panel install

The install itself typically takes one to three days, so the scaffold is up for days rather than weeks. Solar scaffolding.

Chimney repair

Repointing typically takes one to three days once access is in place, and the scaffold is usually up for one to two weeks. Chimney scaffolding.

Roof replacement

A typical domestic re-roof takes two to five working days on site; the scaffold is normally up for two to four weeks. Roof replacement scaffolding.

Rendering and painting

Rendering typically takes four days to three weeks and cement-based render usually needs 7–14 days to dry before painting. Scaffold is normally up two to four weeks. Render scaffolding.

Extension

Scaffold is typically up for four to eight weeks, and a loft conversion typically takes six to twelve weeks or more. Extension and loft scaffolding.

What Makes a Job Run Longer?

  • Bad weather, which can stop roofing, rendering and brickwork
  • Problems found once work starts, such as rotted timbers
  • Materials or trades arriving late
  • Changes to the scope, such as an extra elevation

Tell us as early as you can. Extra weeks typically cost around £50–£150 each, and we will agree how to extend the hire with you before it runs on. For more on hire, see scaffolding hire in Essex, and for prices see the cost guide.
