How to Choose a Scaffolding Company: 8 Questions to Ask

A short checklist to separate qualified, insured scaffolders from the rest before you accept a quote.

The Short Answer

Ask for proof, not promises: CISRS cards for the people erecting the scaffold, evidence of public liability insurance, a scaffold inspection certificate at handover, who will handle any highway licence, and a written, itemised quote. A good scaffolder will answer all of it without hesitation.

The 8 Questions

1. Are your scaffolders CISRS-qualified?

CISRS cards show training in scaffolding. You can check a card on the NOCN card checker.

2. What insurance do you hold?

Ask to see public liability cover. Essex Highways requires £10 million public liability from anyone applying for a scaffold licence. Axis holds £10 million.

3. Who inspects the scaffold?

HSE says a competent person must inspect a scaffold from which a person might fall 2 metres or more, on completion and at least weekly. We hand over an inspection certificate on every job.

4. Will I need a licence, and who applies?

If scaffold is on or over a pavement or road, a licence is needed, and the contractor applies. Essex Highways states 15 working days; Southend-on-Sea City Council asks for 28 days' notice.

5. Is the quote itemised and in writing?

It should state the scaffold, hire period, extra-week rate, and any licence cost. Ours are clear, itemised and no-obligation.

6. What happens if the job overruns?

Ask the weekly rate for extra time before you agree. Typical extra weeks run around £50–£150.

7. Who dismantles it, and when?

Dismantling should be included and scheduled with you. Ours is part of the hire.

8. What do other customers say?

Read recent reviews. Axis has 5.0 from 31 Google reviews, which you can read on our Google profile.

Why Local Matters

A scaffolder based nearby can respond quickly, knows local access and parking, and is easier to reach if something changes mid-job. We are based in Rayleigh and aim to respond to quote requests the same working day.
